Wedding Ring Symbol

What is more synonymous to diamonds than the wedding ring! Since April is the month of diamonds, I have been researching it's various meanings, symbols and social repercussions and I came across an interesting little fact that I had never thought of before. Why in Western culture do we wear a wedding ring on the left hand and on the fourth finger? Why not the right hand or another finger?

Our Western tradition of wearing a wedding ring developed from the Roman "annulus pronubis" when the man gave a ring to the woman at the betrothal ceremony. It was worn on the ring finger because they believed that the vein in the fourth finger of the left hand, referred to as the vena amoris, was connected directly to the heart, a symbol of love.
